QGIS as a Business Model

QGIS is one of the most popular Geographic Information Systems (GIS) softwares in the geospatial community.

Some main qualities and functionalities, among others, are the friendly and intuitive interface, its simple operation, the existence of a large amount of resources to be used, and the transparency of open source code that allows to modify or customize the platform. 

However, its free character is still permeated by some myths that will be presented through the below perspectives:

1. High Competition

Many people see the fact that another competitor will use the same solution as you, since the software is free. This is feasible to happen, however this is not a problem. In situations where the user will resort to support, often the same is consulted with a "competitor" that in this case becomes a partner. Note that there is no software developer that centralizes its development because the solution has open source. As such, the partners will work together with your company, because everyone will contribute to solving QGIS internal problems or help to disseminate and extend the use of this software, strengthening the community.

2. Development Complexity

This myth deconstructs itself when the information that QGIS accepts Plug-ins is written in Python or C ++, two of the languages most used for development. In addition, QGIS allows you to establish remote database connections or spatial data services available on the web. Its integration with other free solutions, such as - PostGIS, GRASS and MapServer - allows you to extend your capabilities beyond your own capabilities. As a result, the user can develop: an integrated database environment, geoprocessing and spatial analysis and its dissemination in a Web environment.

3. Performance Limitation

Performance limitation is a common complaint of QGIS users. Many users say that because they do not have a built-in tooling structure, the features do not provide quality of performance. Not really. Like any GIS solution, the user must be aware of a set of care to be taken before starting a project in the environment. First of all, one must be aware of the rules of data recording, when we cannot use special characters in the data nomenclature, a recurring factor of failure. We must be attentive to the vector structure of the geographic data. If the data presents topological errors, the processing will hardly be effective. Finally, make sure that all plug-ins are not corrupted or have address errors in their structure in the Windows environment. These cautions already significantly reduce the risk of software inconsistencies. QGIS 3.0 was released with an integrated data execution and processing framework, improving resource performance.

4. Chaotic Appearance

The chaotic aspect was one of the main troubles of previous versions of QGIS software. With a leaner navigation structure, the features are seemingly well positioned within the entire structure. The elegant profile of the new solution also allowed other features such as: data execution manager, layout panel and user system for each project. Therefore, the solution is more organized.

Considering all of the above aspects, QGIS presents all the requirements to be used from the point of view of managing georeferenced assets in a certain company. Its profile is free and open source, while it guarantees autonomy, assertiveness and permanence in the use of geographic information systems.
